Faves of 2018 (vol. 1)

I'm happy to report that the first quarter of this year has delivered some truly outstanding music and, as evidenced by this mix, it's stylistically all over the map... well, all over the Un-Herd map, anyway. Don't be expecting anything too far removed from the blog's usual purview. No vapor wave, baby metal, clown step, truffletone, or Fripp hop (I may have made up some of those). Regardless, I can tell you that I had the chance to road test this mix on a long distance drive and it passed with flying colors. 80 solid minutes of non-stop should-be hits that somehow flow together.

Solid quarterly report, RP. Keep those numbers up, and we're talking a Bonus next time.

Particularly enjoyed the Miesha and Public Access TV. And the Pandoras sounded pretty Muffs-ish to me. I'm betting there's a connection.

OK here's a bonus. It's from 2015 but brand new to me. The first track just kills me. Think it all sounds pretty UHMish at any rate. Maybe new to you too?

Thanks for the comments, everybody!

I'd never heard of the Stupid Daikini. Sounds cool! I'll definitely keep an eye out for any future releases!

As for the Pandoras, they were Kim Shattuck's band just previous to the formation of the Muffs. Their album from 1986 "Stop Pretending" is spectacular 60s-influenced garage rock. Earlier stuff was good too, but a little too slavish to the original punk sound (IMO). The new Pandoras EP is a reformation of the original band (minus Paula Pierce, RIP), with a few new songs and some rejigged old ones. Recommended!

Roy, thanks for the info on the Pandoras. I'll be checking them out. Always fun to discover a 'new' band that already has a back catalog to dive into.

Have you come around on the Public Access T.V.?

How do you like the new Sloan?

Appreciate you keeping this up, my man, always get tons of choice recs from you. Don't forget about twitter!

I don't think I'll ever fully come around on the new Public Access TV. It's not that I actively dislike it, just that the new direction is a little too slick and polite for my taste, although it's a strategy that'll probably net them a few more fans overall.

The new Sloan album is typical Sloan: solid, but a little faceless. I always feel that I SHOULD like Sloan more than I do - melodic, guitar-based pop is kinda the bullseye of this blog - but as much as the sound is there, the hooks just aren't. There wasn't a song I felt was good enough to include on that last Faves mix. But I totally get that some folks would strongly disagree.

And Twitter... I like keeping the UHM tweets as close to positive as possible. The twitter account is there, like this blog, to promote artists that I appreciate, rather than to criticize those that I don't. Unfortunately, there's waaaaaay more stuff I don't like than stuff that I do, which leads to complete radio silence for weeks at a time. Apologies for that - but it's probably only gonna get worse. ;)
